  McDowell and Co is established as a trading company with its Headquarters in Madras, by an enterprising Scotsman, Angus McDowell.

History has it, that McDowell's rapidly became the preferred purveyors of fine imported liquors and cigars that gratified the palates of Maharajahs and British Commandants alike.

‘Vittal Mallya acquires McDowell's, initiating a new era in the history of the company.  
     
  1959  
   
  The first distillery is established in Cherthala, on the banks of Kerala's famed Vembanad Lake. McDowell's begins bottling Bisquit Brandy and Dorville French Brandy, from imported concentrates.  
   
1963-64  
Following the termination of the import contract for No.1 Bisquit Brandy, McDowell's launches its own McDowell's No.1 Brandy, creating the template for the No.1 brands that followed.

  Vittal Mallya acquires Carew & Co with distilleries in Rosa (UP), Asansol (West Bengal) and Darsana (East Bengal now Bangladesh) The Rosa plant was known for manufacturing the country's only 10-year old rum, Carew's Rum. Carew's other popular brands include Blue Riband Gin, Booth's Gin, Carew's Dry Gin, Carew's Imperial Whisky, Carew's Fine Brandy and Doctor's Brandy. Vittal Mallya acquires Phipson & Co., Calcutta, thus creating a national footprint for the Spirits business.

  McDowell's No. 1 Whisky launched and proves to be an instant success. Today, McDowell's No. 1 Whisky is the definitive flagship brand of United Spirits Limited. McDowell's No.1 is ranked 14 in the 2015 BrandZ™ Top 50 Most Valuable Indian Brands rankings.

McDowell's manufacturing slowly starts spreading its roots. Hyderabad distillery is commissioned, followed by one in Ponda (Goa) in 1971 and in Hathidah (Bihar) in 1973.

  Vittal Mallya acquires Herbertsons & Co. In the same year, Vijay Mallya, his son is inducted as Director in McDowell & Co.

In the 1970s, Vittal Mallya defied all odds to acquire a host of breweries during Prohibition in India.

  Vittal Mallya goes on a distillery acquisition spree bagging distilleries in Udaipur, Alwar, Mirganj, Serampore and also sets up a plant in Pondicherry.

  In the 80's, Master Blenders perfect Royal Challenge, popularly known as RC, by skillfully marrying select Scotch whiskies with fine Indian malts. Royal Challenge trail blazes from the North to win the hearts of whisky drinkers across India. RC is now the sole millionaire brand in the "premium" whisky segment.

  After the demise of Vithal Mallya, the board unanimously appoints Dr. Vijay Mallya as the Chairman of McDowell’s.

  McDowell's No.1 Rum is launched- Celebration (Dark) and Caribbean (White)

  McDowell's acquires the spirits business of Forbes Campbell & Company Limited with a manufactory at Nashik and its brand portfolio.

  McDowell's launches Asia's first Single Malt, Duet Gin and Vodka variants. Shaw Wallace launches Antiquity Rare Premium Whisky, a blend of exclusive Scotch, fine Indian malts and premium neutral alcohol.

India's first joint venture in alcoholic beverages is created - United Distillers India Limited is formed with United Distillers plc of UK. Black Dog 12 YO Deluxe Scotch, Black and White, VAT 69 and White Horse are bottled in India at the company’s Nashik Unit.

Carew Phipson Limited, Consolidated Distilleries Ltd and a few other companies merge into McDowell's.  
1998  
McDowell & Co Ltd celebrates its centenary. With five millionaire brands in its portfolio: No.1 McDowell's Whisky with annual sales of over 2.5 million cases, No.1 McDowell's Brandy with annual sales in excess of 2 million cases and Celebration Rum, Old Cask Rum and Diplomat Whisky with sales of ove one million cases each.  
2005  
Vijay Mallya’s persistent efforts since over a decade finally pays off. McDowell's completes acquisition of Shaw Wallace & Company, for long its traditional competitor in the market place. Celebrated brands Royal Challenge, Antiquity, Director’s Special, White Mischief amongst others now part of the portfolio.

  United Spirits Limited, is created through the merger of McDowell & Co Limited, Herbertsons Limited, Triumph Distillers and Vintners Private Limited, Baramati Grape Industries India Limited, Shaw Wallace Distilleries Limited and four other companies.

The company acquires Bouvet Ladubay, subsidiary of France-based Taittinger.

  USL acquires Whyte and Mackay, the United Kingdom's leading Scotch Whisky distillers, for GBP 595 million. USL, now becomes the world's third largest spirits group, after Diageo of Britain and Pernod Ricard of France.

  USL acquires Liquidity Inc., makers of Pinky vodka.

  USL introduces McDowell's No 1, Royal Challenge and Antiquity in a new, international pack. Whyte & Mackay Special, bottled at Nashik facility is launched.

Black Black Dog 18 YO and Four Seasons Barrique Reserve is launched, changing the luxury paradigm for the Indian consumer.

  United Spirits creates history. Sells 114 million cases to establish its volume leadership in the world alcohol beverage market.

McDowell's No 1 Platinum - 100% grain based whisky crafted by Richard Paterson, Master Blender of Whyte & Mackay, reaches the millionaire milestone in its debut year. Indian Skipper, MS Dhoni, endorses its Soda extension.

  McDowell's VSOP follows the McDowell's millionaire tradition in 2011 and well on its way to achieving a million cases in the near future.

Diageo plc acquires 54.8% shareholding in United Spirits making India one of its largest markets. Currently, United Spirits Limited (USL) is a subsidiary of Diageo plc which is a global leader in beverage alcohol with an outstanding collection of brands across spirits, beer and wine categories.

  The first brand renovation in several years - Royal Challenge whisky – marked by stunning new packaging, liquid and positioning backed by strong brand support and in-store execution.
