International Wine and Spirit Competition, UK
International Wine and Spirit competition was found in 1969 and is the premier competition of its kind in the world. The quality standard of evaluation is very high and is achieved through a rigorous two step judging process of professional blind tasting and detailed technical (chemical and microbiological) analysis undertaken by an independent laboratory. The competitions' headquarters in Surrey , U.K, include temperature controlled cellars and three dedicated tasting groups. The competition receives more than 5000 entries from over 50 countries. The competition evaluation process is renowned for its rigorous judging. The entries are judged in categories and are divided into further groups by variety, region and vintage as necessary. Each tasting category is judged by a panel of experts with particular knowledge of area and style being tasted. Entries are tasted blind from numbered identical glasses and score at a maximum of 100 points. The top scoring products in each class also receive best in class accreditation. Products scoring 90 - 100 are awarded gold, 80 - 89.9 are awarded silver and 75 - 79 are awarded bronze. Technical analysis is conducted by Corkwise one of the U.K. 's independent laboratories. It ensures that the competition recommended products are technically sound and will be of the same high quality when they reach the consumer. The competition is open to various categories like whisky, whisky scotch, whisky other, whisky Irish, vodka, rum, brandy, cognac etc. USL is proudly represented by Dr. B K Maitin in the panel of judges, as the only Asian.
